In the recent 2024 general election, New Mexico voters elected pro-climate and pro-democracy candidates to key positions in the state legislature. This outcome defies national trends and highlights the state's commitment to addressing climate change and protecting community well-being.

Conservation Voters New Mexico (CVNM) congratulated several candidates on their successful elections or reelections. CVNM expressed enthusiasm for welcoming new policymakers to the Roundhouse and celebrating the return of established environmental advocates.

The CVNM Action Fund, a political action committee affiliated with CVNM, provided financial and in-kind support to candidates committed to climate change mitigation, conservation, and democracy. The fund endorsed 59 candidates for the state legislature, with 28 out of 33 winning contested races, marking an 85% success rate.

Victorious incumbents included Sen. Carrie Hamblen (SD 38) and Rep. Nathan Small (HD 36), who faced competitive races. Newcomers Cindy Nava (SD 9), Heather Berghmans (SD 15), Joseph Hernandez (HD 4), Dr. Elizabeth Torres-Velasquez (HD 30), and Sarah Silva (HD 53) also won their races. Uncontested winners from the primary elections included Angel Charley (SD 30) and Anita Gonzales (HD 70).

Greg Peters, CVNM Vice President of Programs, stated: “The 2024 general election outcome sends a clear message: New Mexicans want bold action on climate change and the protection of our democracy.” He emphasized that as a major oil and gas producing state, New Mexico's actions on climate issues are significant.

The CVNM Verde Voters Fund invested $196,341.50 in critical races across the state to support pro-conservation candidates. This effort helped six incumbents retain their seats while supporting three newcomers who won open races.

New Mexico's federal delegation members successfully defended their seats in Congress. This includes Sen. Martin Heinrich, Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (NM-3), Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-1), and Rep. Gabe Vasquez (NM-2). John Martinez, CVNM’s Campaigns & Civic Engagement Director remarked: “By re-electing New Mexico’s proven pro-conservation leaders to Congress...New Mexico voters are clear: they want action that protects our air, land, water.”
