The New Mexico Office of the State Auditor (OSA) has announced the opening of applications for its Small Local Public Body (sLPB) Assistance Program. This program aims to support small entities in New Mexico with financial regulations, transparency, and fiscal responsibility.

The initiative provides services such as financial auditing, technical assistance, and training on managing public funds. The OSA's goal is to help smaller public bodies overcome challenges like limited resources and staffing that often hinder compliance.

State Auditor Joseph Maestas emphasized the importance of this initiative by stating, “Through this initiative, our local small Local Public Bodies are given the financial tools they need to preserve our water, nurture the land, honor our history, and build a strong bond to land and community.”

Legislators have shown their support for the program. Representative Tara Jaramillo remarked that it serves as "a lifeline for our small public bodies," while Representative Joseph Sanchez highlighted its role in fostering accountability: “Financial integrity is the cornerstone of public trust. The small Local Public Body Assistance Program empowers our local entities to uphold the highest standards of financial management."

Community stakeholders also back the initiative. Paula Garcia from NM Acequia Association stated that it "builds capacity, strengthens financial oversight and supports equitable infrastructure investment in our state."

Launched in 2023, the sLPB Initiative addresses challenges faced by smaller entities like Acequia Associations and Land Grants. It offers targeted support to improve financial reporting and operational efficiencies.

Applications are now open for eligible entities through the OSA's official website. The office has contracted Independent Public Accountants to assist with reporting needs.

The Office of the State Auditor remains committed to promoting transparency and accountability through various initiatives across New Mexico.
