Democratic Representative Gabe Vasquez has opted not to participate in the upcoming KOB 4 debate scheduled for October 16, where he was expected to face his Republican challenger, Yvette Herrell. The decision comes as a point of contention, with Herrell emphasizing the importance of such debates for voter engagement and informed decision-making.
Steve Pearce, Chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, criticized Vasquez's decision. He stated, "It is clear Gabe Vasquez is afraid of having to defend his radical record in Congress, which includes voting against securing the border, voting against protecting the victims of illegal immigrants who commit crimes in our country, and supporting illegal immigrants voting in U.S. elections."
Pearce further commented on Vasquez's past actions: "Cowardly Gabe Vasquez has chosen to hide away so he doesn’t have to be confronted about his past actions, like saying he wanted to defund the police, shut down New Mexico’s oil and gas industry, or the police report disclosing his use of the N-word to harass a co-worker."
Highlighting Herrell's commitment to transparency with voters, Pearce added that she would attend the debate alone if necessary. He encouraged residents from New Mexico’s Second District to contact Vasquez at (202) 225-2365 and insist on a debate.
The situation underscores ongoing political tensions as both candidates prepare for the upcoming election.
