One of five brothers, Kenneth went to school at Dairsey House and Hutchesons' Boys' Grammar School. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Glasgow and a PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry from Strathclyde University. He came to the United States in 1969 for a postdoctoral fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine, where he met his beloved wife, Margaret, at church. He was awarded Doctor of Dental Surgery by Baylor Dental College in Dallas, Texas, and he practiced dentistry in Dallas until 1986 when the family moved to Albuquerque, where he established his own dental practice in the Mountain Run Shopping Center. He sold the practice in 2016, and he continued to see patients with Dental Care In Your Home.

He became a Christian at the Billy Graham crusade in Glasgow in 1955 and has been an active part of church ever since. He worshiped at New Life City where he has led the men's ministry, served as a trustee, and taught in the children's ministry.

He was an active Scottish country dancer with Enchantment Scottish Country Dancers and the New Mexico Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dancers. He enjoyed spin and exercise classes at the JCC. Ken enjoyed travelling, visiting his family in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and serving on medical mission trips in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, and Central America.

Known for his sense of humour, outgoing nature, kindness, faithfulness, and generosity, he is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret Armstrong; his two children, Melanie Cave and Jeremy Armstrong; and his six grandchildren, Daniel, Grace and Esme Cave and William, Theo and Etta Armstrong; as well as his brothers Blair and Michael.
