Obituary

Harold G. Armstrong, age 95, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, in the loving presence of his family.

Harold was born in Fairfield, Illinois, on January 4, 1928, to Audie Belle and Earnie Lyle Armstrong. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1946, achieving the rank of Lieutenant before his honorable discharge. While on leave in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Hal (as many would come to know him) met his soulmate and future wife, Dorothy Earnest. He went on to graduate from Michigan State University on the GI Bill and began a successful career with the US Forest Service. Hal's career led him and his family on a lifelong adventure across his beloved country, eventually leading to his retirement in Albuquerque. Hal spent his retirement running a successful family business founded by his dear wife, which ultimately closed in March 2020.

Harold G. Armstrong was of the Greatest Generation, which was made evident by his deep sense of patriotism, love of this country, and respect for all of those who have served in the armed forces. An avid reader of history and historical biographies, he could be found in his backyard enjoying a bit of scotch and a cheap cigar. Each day he would admire the beautiful, clear-blue, New Mexico sky and comment, "It isn't Heaven, but you can almost see it from here."

He spent many evenings watching Casablanca, "the greatest movie ever made," and could recite every line. He will be remembered for his fierce love of family and country, together with his taste for M&M's, Oreos with a big glass of milk, and any flavor of ice cream.

Hal was preceded in death by the love of his life, Dorothy Earnest; and is survived by his daughters, Dorothy Armstrong of Albuquerque, NM, and Wendy Mattina of Moorpark, CA; and his grandchildren, Stephen Armstrong Saway of New York City and Alexandra Robertson of Simi Valley, CA.

Friends are invited to a visitation at FRENCH - Wyoming on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made in Hal's name to Wounded Warrior Project. Hal and his wife, Dorothy, will be interred later in May at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
