December 7, 1925 ~ December 6, 2022 (age 96)

Obituary

Linwood Hitchcock Boyer, Jr., a true southern gentleman, born in Eufaula, Al on December 7th, 1925, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 6th, 2022.

At the young age of 17, a year after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Linwood attempted to join the Army. To his dismay, a bulging hernia prevented his enlistment. A year later, making a full recovery from hernia repair surgery, he successfully became an infantryman determined to serve his country in WWII. As the Korean War approached, Linwood looked again to infantry but inadvertently became a paratrooper. A fellow battle buddy convinced him to register as a paratrooper, jointly. While his battle buddy was declined, Linwood was accepted, trained, and immediately boarded a plane. During his tour in the Korean War, Linwood was struck by mortar shrapnel temporarily relieving him from his duties and awarding him with a Purple Heart. He was released back into battle shortly after recovery. After 21 faithful years of service in the military, highly decorated at the rank of Sergeant Major, Linwood made the difficult decision to retire.

In 1948, at the age of 23, he met the love of his life and eternal partner, Dorothy Porterfield. A short year later he took her hand in marriage, a union that lasted 63 years until Dorothy's untimely passing.

Linwood was born unto Linwood H. Boyer Sr. and Lucille Moore Boyer. He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Corcoran, and husband John Corcoran; grandchildren, Gavin Corcoran and wife Athena Corcoran, Carrie Corcoran, and husband Majin Garcia, Shannon Corcoran and husband Jacob Young; great-grandchildren, Melody Corcoran, Cora Young, Desmond Young; and step great-grandchild, Johnny Levario. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Boyer and son, Linwood Boyer III.
