OBITUARY
ASCENSION GARCIA
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ascension “Chona” Garcia, 79, on August 2, 2022 surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born on February 21, 1943 to Frances G. Valenzuela and Manuel M. Valenzuela in Albuquerque, NM.
Ascension was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque who attended St. Francis, Eugene Field, Lincoln, and Albuquerque High and worked at Rake’s Variety Store where she met the “love of her life”. On November 7, 1964 she married Benjamin and they raised 4 boys. “Chona” was a great mother and friend. She was an avid softball player who participated in groups with her longtime friends, enjoyed watching her sons play softball and traveling with them to tournaments. She adored her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them and will be greatly missed.
Chona is survived by her sons Christopher, Stephen (Denise), Mark (Tarah), and Benny. Grandchildren: Eliza, Isabella, Serena, Mirra, Ava, Kareen, Gregory, Carson, Isaac, and Benjamin, Great grandchild Athena, Sisters and Brothers: Virginia Mireles, Maryann (Ruben) Jaramillo, Isabel Cianchetti, Jose (Charlene) Valenzuela, Kathy (Bill) Korte, Manuel (Regina) Valenzuela, Eva (Wayne) Cianchetti, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband Benjamin Garcia, parents Manuel and Frances Valenzuela, sister Lucy Valenzuela, grandson Angel Garcia, brother-in-laws Bobby Garcia and Jose Lopez, sister-in-law Jenny Lopez, nephews Roberto Jaramillo, Raymond Lopez, and Joseph Lopez.
Visitation will be held on Monday August 15, 2022 from 6:00PM to 7:00 PM followed by a rosary at 7:00PM at the Strong Thorne Mortuary (1100 Coal Ave SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106). Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at 10:00AM at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church (927 Arizona St SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108). Interment will follow immediately at the Mount Calvary Cemetery (1900 Edith Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102).
