Having been educated in the Detroit school system, receiving his bachelor's degree with Masters credits from Wayne State University, and after his military service during the Vietnam Era, Allen developed an impressive resume:

instructor: Substitute Teacher Allen retired from the Oak Park District in 2001. It was in then Allen and Sheryl relocated to New Mexico to begin a new chapter of their lives. He continued to have the desire to mentor young children, and subsequently became a Behavior Specialist, then a beloved substitute teacher with the Albuquerque School District. His young students absolutely adored "Mr. M" and would always put forth their best efforts for those stars they had to earn. He also loved to entertain his students with Yoyo tricks.

On days he was not subbing, Allen loved to play golf with his best buddies. He really looked forward to fellowshipping on those days, and going to KFC afterwards for those whole wings, 5 for $2.00! It was with this same group of golfers that Allen had a burning desire to help some of the students he was teaching. He came up with the idea of "Golfers for Coats for Kids". Each year, the group would donate new coats to designated schools. He was very proud to provide this service to the community.

As a family man, Allen took great pride in being a husband, father, and grandfather. He loved to teach life lessons, give great advice, and encouragement. He could be serious as well as fun loving, tough as well as gentle. He was absolutely great with words, writing speeches that were unparalleled to others. He was also a phenomenal speaker and ended each phone call or conversation with the words "Peace and Good Health", and e-mails with "Gratitude ". He was always a meticulous dresser from head to toe, always having pride in his attire.

Allen leaves to mourn his passing, and celebrate a life well lived, his loving wife of 55 years, Sheryl D. Murry; three sons, Darrell C. Murry of Albuquerque, NM, Dorian F. Murry (Kimberly) of McCalla, AL, and Dakar Y. Murry of Redford, MI; two grandchildren: Kendall N. Murry of McCalla, AL, and Blake D. McCullough of Lansing, MI; one brother, Gregory J.
