Obituary

Sherrell G. Schwartzman, 82, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, quietly passed away on March 31, 2022. Sherrell was born April 4, 1939, to Wayne and Margaret Thurman. She was well known for her elegance, grace, feistiness, leadership, organizational skills, and her tireless volunteer work for the Ballut Abyad Shrine Circus. Sherrell graduated from Valley High School in 1958 and was especially proud of earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1991. She graduated Magna Cum Laude, from the University of New Mexico. Graduating with high honors led to Sherrell's invitation to become a member of the prestigious academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, which she considered to be one of her greatest personal achievements.

Sherrell loved to fish with her husband and friends, Georgia, and Johnny Cunico on their boat; during her time in school, it was not unusual to find Sherrell studying with her books in her lap and fishing pole in hand just waiting for her next big catch. Sherrell maintained a beautiful home and loved to entertain her friends, family, and the occasional stranger. Christmas and birthday parties were her favorite and were always well attended. She had the ability to host intimate and large gatherings while always making it look effortless.

Sherrell is survived by her husband and the love of her life of 46 years, Gary Schwartzman. She was a devoted mother to Shane Yost, Clifford Yost (Jennifer), MAJ (Ret.) Joseph Charles Schwartzman (Geri), Amy Nolker (Don), Maryjanet Davis (Jenn); and several grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Wayne Hartbarger; and daughter, Lesley Garringer. Sherrell also leaves behind her longtime friends, Alma Byrd and Georgia Cunico.

One of Sherrell's passions and greatest sources of joy were her beloved Shih Tzus, Killer, Butch, and Sundance. Sherrell loved her family, friends, and sweet dogs with unwavering devotion. She will be missed by all who knew her. A special thanks to Edith and Stefanie for their gentle care and support, your kindness will never be forgotten.

Sherrell's Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 30, 2022, 2:00 pm, at Ballut Abyad Shrine Center, 6600 Zuni S.E. Albuquerque, New Mexico 87108.
