Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) recently issued a statement on former Sante Fe Mayor Javier Gonzales after his death.

In October 2020, it was made public that Gonzales was diagnosed with stage four cancer; he died peacefully at Christus St. Vincent, according to KRQE.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of an undisputed leader and deeply treasured member of the northern New Mexico community," Grisham said in the statement. "Javier Gonzales was a trailblazer, a fierce advocate, and a dedicated leader–he was also a beloved son, a remarkable father, and an incredible friend, including to me.”

Gonzales was elected mayor of Santa Fe in 2014 and was the first openly gay mayor, according to KRQE.

KRQE also reports that after serving one term as mayor, Gonzales became the head of the Christus St. Vincent hospital foundation.

"Even before he became known across the country for his devotion to protecting and furthering equal rights, New Mexicans knew and loved Javier for his dedication to uplifting youth, to improving the health and well-being of the community, and to protecting the environment for generations to come," Grisham said in the statement. "He was a wonderfully kind, courageous, and effective man – New Mexicans have lost an incredible champion. My heartfelt prayers are with Javier’s daughters, his family and friends, and his greater community across New Mexico.”
