Obituary
On October 9, 2021, Verlie Mae (Asberry) French (affectionately known as “G” by her immediate family), passed away into God’s graces after battling health issues. She possessed a true warrior spirt throughout her lifetime and lived each moment to its fullest, for 91 years.
Verlie was born on October 30, 1929, in Rosebud, Texas, to parents, Green Asberry and Birdana (Phenix) Asberry. As a child, she was like a second mother to her younger siblings after the sudden passing of their parents when she was just fifteen years old. Verlie, raised by her grandmother Ella, was taught to be strong, independent, and tidy. Her grandfather, Silas, was the inspiration behind her love for coffee. As young adults, Verlie and two of her sisters left Rosebud and moved to Lamesa, Texas. It was there she met her future husband, Worth French. Verlie and Worth were married on August 14, 1953, in Lovington, New Mexico. In 1957 the couple moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico and started a family. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Verlie was a nursing assistant at Chapman’s Nursing Home for years. She was a dutiful member of Faith Tabernacle Baptist Church. She loved her family, shopping and sports, especially basketball. She enjoyed reading the Bible, eating desserts, and watching her favorite show, The Bold and The Beautiful.
Verlie was proceeded in death by her parents, Green and Birdana Asberry; brothers, Roosevelt Asberry, Freddie Lee Asberry, Willie Earl Asberry, and Claude Asberry; sisters, Edna Gordon, Ruby Jean Peterson, Oscar Lee Robinson and Haila Taylor. She is survived by her children, Kirk French and wife Carrie, Stacie French; stepson, Quincy Wallace and wife Callie; grandchild, Austin French; her siblings, Green Asberry Jr. and wife Monyne, and Birdell (Asberry) Daughtery; best friend, Mildred Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Verlie will be dearly missed and always in our hearts.
