Albuquerque City Council is set to deliberate on the proposed budget put forth by Mayor Tim Keller's Administration this week. In a time where inflation is on the rise, local governments are faced with tough decisions to meet the needs of their communities. Mayor Keller emphasized the importance of maintaining quality city services, programs, and amenities, stating, “Our community expects, and deserves, quality City services, programs and amenities.”

The proposed budget aims to uphold essential services for Albuquerque residents and businesses despite the increasing costs of goods and services. Chief Financial Officer Kevin Sourisseau highlighted the challenges faced by the city, noting, “The City, like families and businesses, feels the impact of increased costs across the board.”

The budget addresses various critical areas such as fighting crime, addressing housing and homelessness, behavioral health and addiction response, youth and family programs, and quality of life improvements. Despite an increase in expected revenue, the cost of providing these services has also surged significantly due to rising inflation. For instance, food costs have risen by 44% over the past five years and are projected to increase by another 20% next year.

In response to the escalating costs, city departments are exploring ways to enhance efficiency and streamline services to continue delivering for Albuquerque families. The proposed adjustments in fees, including those for the Planning Department and BioPark, are aimed at ensuring sustainable development and providing the best care for animals amidst rising operational expenses.

While some have criticized the proposed budget for modest fee increases, the adjustments are deemed essential to maintain and enhance the services and programs offered by the city. The funds generated from these fees play a crucial role in supporting essential city services such as police, fire and rescue, senior support, and youth and family services.

As Albuquerque grapples with the financial implications of increased costs, the city remains committed to prioritizing access to services for its residents, businesses, and families, ensuring that essential amenities are accessible during challenging times.
