The University of New Mexico Hospital's Critical Care Tower (CCT) is set to be adorned with over 100 unique pieces of artwork, thanks to a $1.5 million grant from the state of New Mexico's public art fund. Fabián Armijo, Executive Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at UNM Hospital, emphasized the significance of art in New Mexico, stating, "Art is very important to New Mexicans, from the religious art of northern New Mexico to Native American jewelry."

The selection process for the artwork in the CCT was meticulous and involved a committee that carefully curated pieces from various catalogs, ensuring diversity and representation. Sandy Johnson, RA, a health care facilities planner at UNM Hospital, highlighted the intention behind the selection, stating, "We tried to select pieces that had brighter colors and inspiring messages."

The chosen artworks, including pieces by artists such as Daniel Brown, Brian Stinson, and Diego Romero, aim to create a welcoming and uplifting atmosphere within the CCT. Johnson mentioned that the art committee focused on selecting pieces that would provide solace to individuals amidst challenging circumstances often faced in hospitals.

The art displayed in the CCT reflects the rich cultural heritage of New Mexico, with pieces ranging from those highlighting the natural beauty of rural New Mexico to thought-provoking murals. In addition to the main display, the CCT will feature three pocket galleries that will rotate artworks throughout the year, providing a platform for local artists to showcase their talent.

Armijo expressed his hope that the artwork in the CCT would resonate with visitors from diverse backgrounds, stating, "There are so many cultures represented. Whoever you are and wherever you are from, you will see something that feels like home to you." UNM Hospital employees are eager to unveil the artwork in the CCT, aiming to create a space that not only reflects the diversity of New Mexico but also offers a sense of comfort and familiarity to all who enter the facility.
